Woodstock, Ont. - Team Canadas Brooke Henderson carded a 4-under 67 at Craigowan Golf and Country Club to jump into the lead at the Canadian Womens Amateur Championship on Wednesday. Henderson opened her second round with a 3-under 32 and followed it with back-nine birdies on the par-5 13th and par-4 17th holes to grab the outright lead at 5-under 137. The 16-year-old has played near flawless golf since opening the tournament with an over-par front-nine on Tuesday. "It was a tough start yesterday being 3-over through eight holes but then I went 4-under the rest of the way which was really huge," said Henderson, the defending champion. "I had a couple of moments yesterday that really saved my round and I think that really saved my tournament. Going into today I knew I had momentum and I just wanted to keep that going." With that momentum the Smiths Falls, Ont. native currently sits one-stroke clear of her teammate Augusta James of Bath, Ont. and Liz Breen of Waynesboro, Pa., who share second place at 4-under 138 at the conclusion of Wednesdays windy second round. "It was much tougher today, we were here bright and early and it was quite a bit colder from past days so the ball wasnt quite flying as far," Henderson continued. "The wind also really picked up especially in the middle of my round, I was hitting four clubs more than what I normally do." James battled back during her closing nine, carding birdies on her final two holes to finish with an even-par 71. Breed held the outright lead for a short time on the back-nine before bogeying two of her last six holes to finish tied with James. Australias Su-Hyun Oh posted a 2-over 73 to finish in solo fourth at 2-under 140, while Megan Osland of Kelowna, B.C. and Californias Betty Chen share fifth place at 1-under par. In the Inter-Provincial Team competition, the Team Ontario contingent of Henderson, James and Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., soared away from the field to capture the team title. The squad fired a 5-under 137 to finish 15 strokes ahead of Team Alberta in the 36-hole competition at 10-under par. In the Mid-Amateur division (25+), Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C. posted a 6-over 77 to card a two-round total of 153. Proteau currently sits three strokes ahead of Helene Chartrand of Pincourt, Que. In the Mid-Master division, Chartrand, the defending champion, fired a second round 1-under 70 and currently sits one-stroke ahead of Marion Reid of Etobicoke, Ont. at 11-over 153. The champion of the 101st Canadian Womens Amateur Championship receives an exemption into the 2014 Canadian Pacific Womens Open and also the 2014 U.S. Womens Amateur. The 17-year-old rising star from Smiths Falls, Ont., said Friday she expects to make a decision in the next two weeks regarding whether shell enroll at the University of Florida or join the LPGA Tour. Henderson, who is No. 1 in the world amateur golf rankings, has won seven amateur titles and two pro events this season while making the cut in all four LPGA tournaments she entered. Right now Im making a lot of decisions, the big one being whether to go to Florida, which is one of the top-ranked schools in the U.S., or turn professional, Henderson said during a telephone interview. My decision is a little unclear at the moment but I think in the next couple of weeks a decision should be made. Giving Henderson food for thought is her performance in the LPGA events. Not only did the articulate, well-spoken teen make the cut in all four tournaments, she finished tied for 10th — and was the top amateur — in the U.S. Womens Open. She also finished tied for 26th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is also a major. Henderson was victorious at the Canadian Women’s Tour Ontario and PGA Women’s Championship of Canada and was also the low amateur and low Canuck at the Canadian Pacific Womens Open in London, Ont., last August — the LPGA Tours lone stop north of the border. Those two (majors), really, were confidence boosters and showed me, You know what? I can compete with the best, Henderson said. I know I still have a long way to go until I am consistently up there at the top but those were definitely key moments in my summer. Earlier this month, Henderson won the individual title at the world amateur championship in Japan and combined with Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., and Augusta James of Bath, Ont., to earn Canada a second-place finish in the team event. For Henderson, its a perfect prep event for the upcoming world junior girls championship at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont. It doesnt happen often in golf that its a team sport, Henderson said. The Ryder Cup is going on right now but other than that, theres not many team events so it is a learning experience, definitely. But coming off the world amateur, that was my last tournament so Im still in that mindset and I think thats definitely going to help. As the host country, CCanada will field two three-golfer teams in the inaugural 15-country event, which begins Sunday.dddddddddddd Henderson, Ottawas Grace St-Germain and Victorias Naomi Ko will make up one squad while the other will consist of Calgarys Jaclyn Lee, Selena Costabile of Thornhill, Ont., and Alisha Lau of Richmond, B.C. The 72-hole tournament runs through Wednesday. A total of 48 golfers aged 19 and under are scheduled to participate in team and individual competition. Qualifying countries were invited based upon how they fared at the 2012 event in Turkey. They picked the top countries so theyre all very good players, theyre all very skilled, Henderson said. Theres always Korea, the U.S., and Japan who are always right up there. Youve got to play your own game but also keep an eye on them. Playing on home soil will put added pressure on the Canadians, but Henderson says thats not necessarily a bad thing. If theres pressure, it means youre doing something right and youre expected to complete something, she said. Definitely everyone here wants us to play well and play our best and hopefully hold up that trophy at the end of the week. Theres always going to be that little bit, you just have to take the challenge and run with it. And given her place in the world rankings, thats an attitude Henderson plans to take on to the course. Like I said, you have to take that challenge and perform your best, she said. If youre able to represent your country and the people around you along the way, thats perfect. The key is definitely to play my own game. Its a team event but if I play well then its going to help my team in the long run. Golf is slated to return to the Summer Olympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and if the Canadian team was selected now, Henderson would make the cut as the highest-ranked female among pro golfers in the country. Although that selection wont be made for a while, Henderson definitely wants to wear Canadas colours in an Olympic competition. Its always been a dream of mine to play for Canada and go to the Olympics, she said. Im excited right now because I am the No. 1-ranked professional in Canada so if the team was chosen right now Id be picked to go to Rio and compete. Im excited to be in this position and hopefully over the next two years I stay there.
