MILWAUKEE -- Brock Stewart gave it everything he had for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The problem for him and the Dodgers, so did Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra. The Brewers pitcher allowed two hits over eight innings, Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer and a two-run double and Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run shot to carry the Brewers to a 7-0 victory on Wednesday night, spoiling Stewarts major league debut.Los Angeles selected Stewarts contract before the game, making him the ninth pitcher to start for the Dodgers this season and fourth to make his major league debut. He is the first Dodger to begin in Class-A and start a major league game in the same season since Hideo Nomo in 1995.Stewart (0-1) retired the side in order in the first, but the Brewers scored five times on six hits in the second, highlighted by Nieuwenhuis two-run homer and Brauns two-run double. After intentionally walking Jonathan Lucroy to load the bases with two outs, Stewart struck out Chris Carter to end the inning. That was definitely fun that first inning, Stewart said. (It) changed a little bit after that. The 24-year-old right-hander regrouped and held the Brewers scoreless for the next three innings. He struck out seven and walked two, throwing 95 pitches.I kind of let it get to me, and left some balls up, Stewart said. They dont miss them here, apparently. Tough inning, but, you know what, I was glad I was able to settle down after that.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was pleased with Brocks effort which may have earned him another start.Regardless, its exciting for Brock, Roberts said. The first inning was clean, electric stuff. You start the second inning with a couple seeing-eye singles. He leaves a fastball out over to Nieuwenhuis for the homer. Two outs and there was hit by the pitch and a walk and then a double by Braun. It happened pretty quickly ... but he got through five innings. Its a tough stage, but I thought he handled himself well.Stewart last pitched June 24 in the Pacific Coast League when he beat Triple-A Round Rock 8-2, allowing two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck 10 and walked one.Brauns two-run homer off Chris Hatcher in the seventh inning gave Guerra some extra cushion, but the 31-year-old rookie right-hander didnt need it.Yasiel Puig ran into the wall trying to track Brauns home run in the seventh. Hobbling a bit, Puig stayed in the game until running out a grounder to short in the top of the eighth. He came out after that. Roberts said Puig would be in the lineup for the finale of the three-game series.I am pretty sure that was my best start in the big leagues, Guerra said of his 11th career start. Thankfully, I was able to locate pitches, throw strikes and help the team win.Guerra (5-1) allowed Corey Seagers double in the first and Puigs single in the fifth. After he walked Adrian Gonzalez in the first, Guerra retired 21 of the next 23 batters, striking out seven.GONZALEZ TOSSEDGonzalez was ejected in the fourth after striking out. Walking back to the dugout, he flicked his wrist and apparently said something to third base umpire Dan Bellino who tossed him out of the game. Gonzalez was upset with Bellino for calling a strike on a checked swing one pitch earlier. It was Gonzalezs fifth career ejection in 1,724 games.I didnt say it, Gonzalez said of the checked swing that was called a strike. I gestured it. I didnt say a word. Thats the first time in my career that Ive ever been tossed without saying a word and walking back to the dugout. I dont know where the basis of tossing somebody is there.SAVE THAT BALLAfter Stewart struck out the Brewers leadoff batter Jonathan Villar, catcher A.J. Ellis rolled the ball into the Dodgers dugout where it was safely stowed away.PETERSON UNAVAILABLEDodgers CF Joc Pederson, who crashed into the wall Tuesday night, did not play. Hes better than he was yesterday, Roberts said. Its going to be a two, three-day thing and at that point in time, well make a decision (on a move to the disabled list).KERSHAW UPDATEDodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (11-2, 1.79 ERA) is back in Los Angeles and headed for scans on his sore back. Roberts remained cautiously hopeful that the three-time NL Cy Young winner could make his next scheduled start Friday night at Dodger Stadium against Colorado.TRAINERS ROOMDodgers: The Dodgers placed INF/OF Kike Hernandez on the 15-day DL with left rib cage inflammation retroactive to June 28 to make room for Stewart. ... LHP Alex Wood (left posterior elbow soreness) was transferred to the 60-day DL.Brewers: Manager Craig Counsell said that RF Domingo Santana, who is on the 15-day DL with right elbow soreness, would not play before the All-Star Break. Youve got to get pain-free before he can move to the next step, Counsell said.UP NEXTDodgers: RHP Kenta Maeda (6-5, 2.91) is 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA in seven road starts this season. He took a no-decision facing the Brewers June 19 at Dodger Stadium, allowing one run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three in the 2-1 win.Brewers: RHP Zach Davies (5-3, 3.74) received a no-decision in his only start against the Dodgers June 17 at Dodger Stadium. He allowed one run and five hits in seven innings and left the game with a 2-1 lead, but the Brewers lost 3-2 in 10 innings. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Wade Phillips is cracking wise again. But his broken rib is no joke. So, hes strongly considering a move from the sideline to the coaching box when the Broncos visit Oakland on Sunday night.Denvers defensive coordinator suffered a cracked rib last weekend when Chargers running back Melvin Gordon -- shoved by Von Miller -- plowed over him on the sideline, sending Phillips to the hospital. Not that anybodys interested, but Im day to day, thats my status, Phillips said Thursday as he stepped up to the podium for his first public comments since the jarring hit.Of course, the 69-year-old must-follow on Twitter has had plenty of witty tweets in the days since the big hit, including a GIF of a chef cutting up a beef rib and this comment: I was lucky only fractured 1 rib (have 23 more good ones).Phillips was injured in the first half of Denvers 27-19 win over San Diego on Sunday. His head bounced off the ground in a scary scene as Gordon bowled him over during Bradley Robys pick-6 of Philip Rivers.I said, `If Im going to go out, Id like to go out on an interception for a touchdown, Phillips said.He was immobilized and carted off the field, then became the third member of the Broncos taken from the stadium in an ambulance in the last month, joining coach Gary Kubiak (complex migraine on Oct. 9 following a game against Atlanta) and left tackle Russell Okung (concussion-like symptoms on Oct. 13 after a game at San Diego).Phillips said he felt fortunate he wasnt hurt any worse because I hit the back of my head on the ground and they did the CT scan or whatever on my head and they didnt find anything.I dont have to go through (concussion) protocol this week, Phillips said. What he is considering is staying out of harms way, however.Im thinking about being in the box this week just because I am in some pain and I really dont want to get hit again certainly, Phillips said. I did go up in the box when I was with Kube in 2011 when they took my kidney and my gallbladder out. I went upstairs. So, it may be another instance where I might do that. The Broncos (6-2) face the Raiders (6-2) in an AFC West showdown Sunday night.Having Wade ouut there, you get to see him, you get to high-five and stuff, but thats not the important thing, Miller said.dddddddddddd The important thing is getting the calls, making sure that hes out of harms way, making sure hes safe no matter what.Phillips has spent most of his career on the sideline save for that one game with the Texans five years ago. But he said there were some advantages to being in the coaches box.Its clear up there. Its obviously quiet and you can see well, he said. Also, unlike last time he was in the coaching box, the league now allows coaches to communicate directly with the defensive player designated to receive the play calls. So, it makes it easier, Phillips said. The player on the receiving end of Phillips calls is expected to be linebacker Brandon Marshall, expected to return from a pulled hamstring that sidelined him last week. The Broncos might be without star cornerback Aqib Talib as they face Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. The Broncos sent Talib to California for a second opinion on his ailing lower back Thursday. Talib missed last weeks game and Roby started in his place and earned the AFCs defensive player of the week honors after a stellar performance that included the 49-yard interception return for a touchdown. So, I obviously feel good about him, and we always have, Phillips said. But we hope Talib comes back whenever he can, certainly. With Kayvon Webster (hamstring) also ailing, Lorenzo Doss would again be the nickel back. He had two big pass breakups last week, including a fourth-and-goal breakup from the 2 in the closing minutes.Doss, a second-year pro from Tulane, had a slew of interceptions in training camp and the preseason, including a pair of pick-6s of Mark Sanchez. He kind of ran our other quarterback out of here with two 100-yard interceptions, Phillips said. And that one was no joke.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapleton ' ' '
