CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemsons mission this week: Hang on to passes and eliminate the drops. The usually sure-handed receivers for the fifth-ranked Tigers (2-0) have played like theres grease on their hands. The group had eight drops in a way-too-close 30-24 win over Troy last week and they want to turn things around against South Carolina State (0-2) on Saturday. The problem is not with just one or two players, its across the board for Clemsons receivers. Usually reliable wideouts including Artavis Scott, Hunter Renfrow, Mike Williams and Deon Cain all have dropped catchable balls the first two weeks.Receivers coach Jeff Scott counted eight drops against Troy.Thats enough for a whole season, he said.Coach Dabo Swinney, Clemsons former receivers coach, spent time this week working with receivers to sure up their technique and early season confidence.Swinney said he felt like he needed to get in there with receivers coach Jeff Scott and get back to some of the things we needed to do just from a drill standpoint and creating the eye intensity that it takes and the confidence.Even with more drops, dont expect the FCS Bulldogs to make this one tight -- Clemson has won its three matchups with South Carolina State by a combined 179-20 score. Still, Swinney and the receivers are thinking down the road for when the Atlantic Coast Conference season begins.Clemsons receiving rotation took a hit this week with Renfrows broken hand suffered when he caught a TD against Troy. Renfrow had been the Tigers touchdown maker with TD catches in four consecutive games.Cain and Ray-Ray McCloud will see extra action with Renfrow, expected to miss four games, on the sidelines.Swinney liked what he saw this week. There is a lot of pride in that group and nobody needs to tell them they need to do a better job, Swinney said.---Some things to watch when South Carolina State plays No. 5 Clemson:POSITIVE WATSON: Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson apologized to fans for the negative energy he showed that he believed impacted the team in a 30-24 win over Troy last Saturday. Watson says hell be refocused on the positives of his college career and channel that into better performances. Watson, who entered the season as a Heisman Trophy favorite, has thrown four TDs with three interceptions so far this season.FACING CLEMSON: South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough said facing the Tigers might be more difficult with Clemsons stodgy play on offense so far. Pough said Clemson will likely be more focused to fix the problems it has endured this year. Well have our work cut out for us this coming Saturday, he said.CLEMSON VS. THE FCS: The Tigers come into this one with a 30-0 mark against programs in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. Clemsons average margin of victory in those games has been 40-7. The closest call came in 2011 when Wofford lost 35-27, Clemsons only single-digit result against an FCS teamTHE WAITING: South Carolina State waited four hours last week through lightning and weather delays before falling 53-24 at Louisiana Tech, a game that ended at 2 a.m. Bulldogs coach Buddy Pough said it looked like the game would be called and had his team ready to leave when the call came that things would go on. It was a very unusual circumstance to say the least, Pough said.OLD FACES: South Carolina State brings in two first-year coaches quite familiar with Clemsons Death Valley in defensive coordinator Kirk Botkin and offensive coordinator G.A. Mangus. The two were longtime members of South Carolinas staff under Steve Spurrier who were not retained by new coach Will Muschamp.----AP College Football: collegefootball.ap.org Wholesale Paul George Shoes . He will miss league matches against Chelsea on Monday and West Ham on Dec. ST. LOUIS -- There will be no red October this year in St. Louis after the Cardinals missed the postseason for the first time since 2010.St. Louis finished 86-76, missing a wild-card berth by one game as the rival Chicago Cubs won the NL Central Division by 17 1/2 games over the second-place Cardinals. We didnt meet our goals. Theres no other way to say other than its disappointing, general manager John Mozeliak said after Sundays season-ending win over Pittsburgh. Theres a lot of things we could talk about -- defense, base running or record at home. These this will have to be addressed at some level this offseason.Still, the GM said he believes the Cardinals are in a good spot and said he was very confident about the talent in the farm system.Hopefully, can we can address the right pieces, whether its in either trade or free agency to improve on where we are today, he said. We finished strong but not strong enough. There are questions at pitcher and the outfield, too, with Matt Holliday not expected back. Adam Wainwright, the starter in the season finale, was simply trying to come to grips with not playing any more this year.Missing the playoffs by one game, thats hard to swallow, Wainwright said. Theres a lot of different ways we could have won different games. I could have pitched better in a lot of them. You cant do it now. Its more painful to know we just missed out. We never played our best baseball.By not playing in the postseason, Mozeliak quipped, the organization has more time to decide what direction to go.Weve got to figure out a way to take a step forward, Mozeliak said. Theres room for growth. Theres going to be some activity. You look at our club, theres faces at each position. How do we get that better? Some things to watch for with the Cardinals this offseason:ON THE MOUNDLeft-hander Jamie Garcia enters the option year of his contract. He will be due $12 million or the club can pay him $1 million and cut ties. Garcia finished 10-13 with a 4.67 ERA. Lance Lynn will return from Tommy John surgery. Michael Wacha, in his fourth season, struggled and finished 7-7 with a 5.09 ERA. Wainwright will turn 36 during the neext season.dddddddddddd Carlos Martinez is the No. 1 starter and rookie Alex Reyes looks like a solid starter. Free-agent signee Mike Leake went 9-12 with a 4.69 ERA.SPELLING RELIEFWho will the Cardinals go with as their closer in 2017? Seung Hwan Oh, signed as an extra arm for the bullpen, collected 19 saves after he took over the job. Trevor Rosenthal struggled early and spent nearly two months on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Rosenthal has wanted to be a starter and in his final outing of the year on Saturday covered three innings for the first time since 2012, throwing a career-most 52 pitches.MOSSThe contract situation for Brandon Moss will be worth watching. He finished with 28 homers and 67 RBI but hit just .225. He had been mired in a 7-for-97 stretch that included 34 strikeouts before he hit a home run in Fridays game against Pittsburgh. He earned $8.25 million this season. Moss will be 33 next season.OUTFIELD SHIFT IS ONThe Cardinals are expected to decline the $17 million club option on left fielder Matt Holliday. In his third season, Randal Grichuk won the job in center field and hit .240 with 24 homers, but he was demoted twice during the season to AAA Memphis. With Stephen Piscotty in right field, two spots may be open. Do the Cardinals want to try Tommy Pham or Jeremy Hazelbaker there? Second baseman Kolten Wong also played some center this season.UP THE MIDDLEThe Cardinals pride themselves on good defense. That wasnt really the case this season. Rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz had 16 errors. Second baseman Matt Carpenter made 13 errors and Jeff Gyorko committed 10. First baseman Matt Adams has seven errors. Jhonny Peralta, who switched third when he came back from injury after Diaz won the shortstop position, had four. Gyorko, who hit 30 homers, also can play in the outfield. Second baseman Wong, who had eight errors, signed a five-year $25.5 million contract before the season. Diaz is a lock to stay at shortstop but there may be some musical chairs in the other positions. ' ' '
